Riffology Podcast

Welcome to Riffology Podcast! We’re a (mostly) weekly music podcast that focuses on rock albums from the 80s and 90’s, maybe a few from the 70s and 2000s too.

We are Neil and Chris, we’re both embracing the joys of steadily growing older and enjoying going back to the albums of our youth. Sometimes we ask our listeners to pick the albums from a chosen year and sometimes we pick our own favourites. Sometimes, they are albums we loved and sometimes albums that passed us by and we revisit them to see what all the fuss was about.

This is a celebration of incredible music from a time when albums were meaningful and important to us.

RIFF068 - Hole - Live Through This

Hole โ€” Live Through This (1994) Noise made human: sharp guitars, cracked-glass vocals, and songs that refuse to sand down the splinters. In this episode we unpack how Live Through This became both a blistering rock record and a time capsule of messy, real-life urgency. The big picture Why this alb...

RIFF067 - Tool - Undertow

Two nerds, a laminator, and an extremely long โ€œwarm wormโ€ somehow lead to a deep dive into one of the darkest, driest, and most hypnotic debut albums of the โ€˜90s. Undertow wasnโ€™t just Toolโ€™s arrival โ€” it was a statement: no gloss, no funk, no flannel. Just tight, menacing precision and t...

RIFF066 - A Perfect Circle - Mer De Noms

RIFF065 - Deftones - White Pony

Riffology โ€” Deftones: White Pony (2000) TL;DR: Deftones dodged the nu-metal pigeonhole and built a shimmering, heavy, cinematic classic. RIFF064 - Anthrax - Sound of White Noise

Anthrax pivot hard into the โ€™90s on Sound of White Noiseโ€”first with John Bush, last with Dan Spitzโ€”and somehow make it feel inevitable rather than mid-life crisis. We dig into why the songs land (drier drums, thicker guitars) and how a label switch put a new sheen on the chaos. Along the way: ...
